Perfect Conditions and Large Fleet
With nearly perfect conditions and the largest fleet of the summer, one couldn’t help but be amazed at the racing action on Scenic Bay. Thanks to MacDonald’s Hudson Bay Resort for their sponsorship and hospitality, the eager sailors enjoyed the prerace anticipation.
Learning to get their boat set up for racing without crew proved to be a challenge to some, and others found it easy. Each boat was given a delayed start time, so the beginning of the race wasn’t crowded. The wind and temperature were perfect, and with a few toots of the horn, the fleet was off to the races. It was a downwind start, and two boats hoisted their spinnakers and started making up their handicaps.
The fleet split on the upwind leg looking for advantages on each side of the lake, but boats that chose a long port tack seemed to find the most favorable. In the end, it was Spirit and Lady of the Lake side-by-side with Spirit finally taking over the lead with a few hundred feet to the finish line.
Congratulations to Mike Duncan and Paul Franz for winning their respective fleets. Also of note was the excellent showing by Cam McIntyre, a repeat winner, in the under 20′ class with his Hobie 16 cat Bushwhacker. Next year there should be more boats to challenge Cam.Share
